About This Blog

Donnie Miller

Hi and welcome to my blog. My hope is that, collectively, these blog entries will give you some insight to my thought processes and experiences as a photographer. The following subjects delve into slightly different avenues of this overarching theme.

Landscape Photography Stories

As a museum guide provides historical and artistic context to pieces of art, I hope to do the same with my landscape photography. Understanding the context can often be as interesting as the photo itself. I think you will find these stories enjoyable and enlightening.

Photoshoots

Shooting in NYC provides me the opportunity to work with a world-class team of models, makeup artists, hair stylists and clothing stylists. The bar is set high and it’s this high quality of work that I find extremely rewarding. Through my behind the scenes videos and blog entries, you will gain insights as to the types of obstacles that present themselves and how I problem solve with the team to achieve the desired results.

Retouching

Computers and ink-jet printers have essentially replaced the traditional darkroom. In comparing photography to music, Ansel Adams often referred to the negative as the score and the print as the performance. This photographic relationship still holds true today. Retouching plays an integral role in determining the “performance” of the photograph. Blog entries concerning retouching will provide before and after examples to illustrate this often overlooked process.

Travel Stories

There’s a profound transformation that occurs when traveling abroad. The experience teaches one lessons that can’t be learned from textbooks. Oftentimes, my travel photography parallels this experiential learning. For instance, my portraits of women in the Sam Tar desert of India bring into focus interesting facets regarding patriarchal societies. In my travel blog entries, you will share in the lessons learned, and hopefully in the joy I experienced as well. It’s a pleasure writing these entries because they furnish me an excuse to relive some of my favorite life experiences.
